Dear Parents,
Welcome to your child’s second grade class! We are Raegan Cassady, and Kelly Bertossi, and we are your child’s teachers for second grade. We have high expectations for your children, both academically and behaviorally. As parents of these children, we hope that you will be willing to work with us by expecting great things from them too. We need to work together to teach students how to be responsible, respectful, and hard workers.
Please refrain from dropping by the room for an impromptu conference (am or pm). We cannot guarantee that I will have the adequate time or attention to chat about your child especially in the morning when students are coming in and in the afternoon before and during dismissal. Thank you for your consideration on this matter. Our communication is the key to the children’s success, so I want to give you the respect you deserve when discussing your child.
If you need to speak to us about anything during the year, please feel free to call, email or stop by to schedule an appointment after school. We will keep you informed of what is happening in the classroom through weekly newsletters and updates through email or on our website. You can reach us best by e-maill ([email protected] or [email protected]).The school phone number is 980-343-5480.
Included is some important information about our classroom guidelines, procedures, and curriculum. Hopefully, this will answer many of the questions you might have about your child’s year in second grade.
We looking forward to a wonderful year filled with lots of learning and fun!
Mrs. Cassady Mrs. Bertossi
Lunch:
Our lunch begins at 11:45 and ends at 12:15. Please do not send any glass containers or carbonated drinks to school with your child. They are considered unsafe. Family members are always welcome at lunch. When a student has a visitor they may ask one friend to sit with them. After the visitor has had lunch with the student they must remain in the cafeteria with the rest of the class. Please have the student line up with the class in the cafeteria. Do not drop him/her off at the classroom. Students should not be in the classroom without the presence of a teacher. Parents and other lunchtime visitors should say their "good-byes" at the exit of the cafeteria so that your child can join the rest of the class as normal routine.
For the safety of all children in the building, please make sure that you do not send your child to school with any peanut products- this includes peanut butter.
Snack Time:
Due to the long school day, we will have a quick working snack-time at the end of the day. Snacks will not be provided by the school or teacher. Please send a small snack with your child each day that does not require the use of a utensil and can be easily eaten while the student is working.
Drinks in the Classroom:
While students are allowed to have water bottles in the classroom, please make sure that students only bring water into the classroom. Please refrain from sending in flavor packets (i/e: Crystal Light, Kool-Aid) with your child. They end up getting more on the floor or their faces than in the water.
Written Communication:
It is VERY important to send a written note informing us of any transportation changes. If we do not have a note, your child will be sent home the usual way! We are no longer able to accept emails for transportation changes. If your child is absent, please send a written excuse with your child on the day he/she returns to school so the absence can be changed from an unexcused absence. Also, please keep us informed of any mailing address, email address, or phone number changes throughout the year so we can reach you if needed. I email parents frequently and need an accurate address for communication.
Thursday Folders:
Thursday Folders are an important form of communication between the school and families. This folder will include graded assignments that will provide you with a wealth of information on your child's academic progress. Please take out all work that is in the folder and keep the work at home. At times, there are papers that must be signed and returned. Please take time to go through all the information enclosed in this folder on Thursday evening in order to sign and return any forms to school the next day. All Thursday folders are due back to Irwin the following school day.
Homework:
Your child will be assigned homework every night Monday - Thursday. Students will be bringing all homework home in their homework folder. Please check to see that the work is completed, but make it your child’s responsibility to pack and return it the next day.
You should expect 30 minutes of reading each night. Please have your child record the title and amount of minutes they read at the bottom of their agenda. Please sign or initial next to each day. Students will also have a short assignment in addition to their reading. On Monday and Wednesday, students will have a math, literacy, or other assignment sheet to complete. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, a spelling assignment to be completed in their “spelling notebook." (Words should be practiced each night for the Friday test.) If your child is bringing home more work than that, he or she is probably not completing class work.
Please check your child’s folder every night for unfinished work that needs to be completed and returned the following day. There will also be a long-term project assigned about once a quarter. It is also their responsibility to unpack homework folders at school and turn in assignments. If homework is not turned in on time, the student will pull their behavior pin and have to finish their homework during free time throughout the day.

These standards have not been addressed at this time. However, standards will be introduced before the end of the school year.
6 Day Rotation Schedule:
This year, Irwin is moving to a new 6 Day rotation schedule. This means that we will be using Day 1, Day 2, etc. to describe our weekly schedules, no longer Monday, Tuesday, etc. This will take some getting use to! I will have the Day posted in the classroom and it will be announced on the morning news. Our class will have a different Special Area class everyday from 3:10pm-3:55pm, this will also follow a 6 day schedule. {A detailed classroom schedule is coming soon!} {Please make sure to send your child to school with tennis shoes every 6th day for PE!}
